No todos los bandidos son bandoleros sociales; la definición del bandolerismo social descansa en la relación dialéctica entre bandido y sociedad. Podemos distinguir teóricamente entre un bandolerismo social existente, caracterizado por bandidos adoptaron las restricciones de los mitos como una guía de acción; y un bandolerismo social latente, en el cual los mitos existen, pero los bandidos no los toman en serio.
